The noodler wades into water ranging from a depth of a couple feet to 20 feet and shoves his hand into logs and various other submerged crevasses in order to attract the attention of the catfish lurking inside (while it can be an assortment of fish species, it is most commonly a type of catfish due to their tendency to hide in small places and stay stagnant for long periods of time). This antagonizes the fish to latch onto the noodler's hand/arm as a defensive measure in order to exit the hole they are hiding in. If the fish is large enough the noodler will grab the fish by its gills and in any case will lift it out of the water.
Due to safety concerns, and fish population, noodling is illegal in some southern states. In Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, however, it is legal.
The average weight of a catfish caught in this manner is 40lb
"Power bait, we don't need no stinkin' power bait."
You don't need power bait when your hands are just as good.
